July 2016’s Business of the Month Award

Congratulations to the Hatfield House Culinary Experiences for being awarded Waste Check’s Business of the Month for July 2016. The owner and staff go far above and beyond promoting waste reduction and separation through their everyday operations. They fully participate in waste separation programs throughout the establishment. The Hatfield House has a green house and two gardens on site. All fruits, vegetables, and herbs are used daily in their kitchen and meals are tailored as to what is in season to minimize waste. Paper place mats are used to line the rows in the gardens to help control the weeds and are also used to line their green carts. Flower arrangements that are placed in and around the restaurant are hand picked from the yard. The restaurant is decorated with reused items, such as fine china and framed pictures, that were donated to them by local residents. May 2016’s Business of the Month Award

Congratulations to Bruce Honda for being awarded Waste Check’s Business of the Month for May 2016.

The owners and staff go far above and beyond promoting waste reduction and separation through their everyday operations. Providing proper waste separation containers with adequate signage for staff and public use makes separating very easy to do! They have a 4 stream waste separation station in the customer waiting area, each office is provided with a blue recycle bin and sorting containers are conveniently located in the service bay area. Bulk dispensing containers are used for changing oil and windshield washer fluid which limits the amount of individual containers which saves money and cuts back on a large amount of potential waste. Additional waste is diverted by providing a paper towel only container in the washroom. All cardboard boxes are broken down and recycled properly. Shredding paper on site saves money and reduces their carbon foot print.

In a one–month period approximately 25 bags of recyclable material are collected along with nearly 30kg of organic material, leaving very little residual waste Thank you to Bruce Honda for taking the initiative to reduce waste and set a great example for other businesses to follow!

September 2015’s Business of the Month Award

Congratulations to Nova Star Cruises for being awarded Waste Check’s Business of the Month for September 2015. Nova Star Cruises takes pride in "doing the right thing" with their waste. Their employees come from a variety of countries with varying waste sorting practices. All employees must take a training course which includes the company’s vision on waste management. It is very encouraging to see people from all over the world taking pride and ownership with what they do with their waste. Early on in the season, waste was made a priority by the captain of the ship. The waste doesn’t stop there! Once any unsorted waste is off–loaded from the ship, it is then re–sorted by the shore crew (MacKenzie Security). In the three restaurants on board the ship, staff remove the trays from the tables and sort the waste in the appropriate stations so passengers don’t have to. Approximately 74 to 76 green carts are emptied per month. In August, 67 blue bags and 2410 lbs of cardboard were collected for recycling. Tin cans and plastics are baled on board the ship and sent for recycling. Wooden pallets that are used for loading/unloading stores for the ship are saved for anyone that has use for it. Plastic milk crates are also available for re–use. This level of commitment is a great example for others to follow. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to reduce waste.

August 2013’s Business of the Month Award

Congratulations to the Wild Rose Farm in Gilbert’s Cove, Digby County for winning Waste Check’s Business of the Month for August 2013! Owner Gilberte Doelle takes to heart the idea that farms are closed–loop systems where waste equals fuel. Not only are composted plant material and manure returning nutrients to the soil, food scraps accumulated in processing produce are fed to the chickens, and farm workers enjoy their share in the harvest while putting that energy to work in the field. At a recent compost–tea workshop, Gilberte provided visitors information on how to use weeds as natural fertilizers. Customers are encouraged to return and reuse plant pots, trays, and containers. All "Community Supported Agriculture" members are given a reusable bag for their weekly pick–up. Empty apple cider jugs are filled with water and used as weights or in the greenhouse as a natural heat bank. Empty potting soil bags are even used as mobile flower stands, while baler twine is reused in any way possible, from hanging garlic to dry, to trellising cucumbers and tomatoes. Paper is also used and reused as much as possible. As a certified organic farm, many aspects of their operation have been shaped by environmental concerns and the owners and staff at the Wild Rose Farm have always prioritized looking for ways to reduce, reuse and recycle! Thank you for dedication to helping our environment through waste reduction!

Congratulations to D’Eon’s Rappie Pie in West Pubnico for winning Waste Check’s Business of the Month for February 2013! The staff at D’Eon’s Rappie Pie are keen and diligent when it comes to waste separation. All materials are sorted, then recycled or composted as needed. As a business that works mainly with food products, they ensure that nothing goes to waste! Although food waste can be composted, they strive to make sure that the majority of the food can be utilized in various ways, before it is tossed away. For example, unused food scraps are sent to a local farm to be made into feed. Breads are sold fresh daily, however, the loaves that don’t sell before the end of the day are frozen or reused in different recipes. Their efforts in recycling and composting have allowed them to only need two garbage bags per collection. Congratulations to the Comfort Inn in Yarmouth for being awarded Waste Check’s Business of the Month for January 2013! The Comfort Inn has gone far above and beyond what most other hotels do to reuse and reduce waste within their business. All garbage, organics, and recyclables end up in the right place due to full participation in waste separation programs by all staff, and by providing the proper bins where necessary. Their efforts to reuse items that would have otherwise ended up in the garbage have been beneficial for both the environment, and their community. Blankets and sheets that are no longer used in the guest rooms are donated for use at the local SPCA. Good, useable furniture that was being replaced in the rooms was offered to the public first instead of throwing it all away. Shampoo and conditioner bottles provided by the hotel that are unused or left in the room are donated to a local organization that gives these products to people in need. Service towels are reused for cleaning rags if they can no longer be used in the rooms. Laundry detergent buckets are donated to a local maple syrup producer for reuse. Also, the public are welcome to collect newspapers from the hotel to use for animal bedding. These initiatives from the Comfort Inn have reduced a large amount of waste that would have otherwise been sent straight to the landfill. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to reduce waste. The Comfort Inn is a great example for other businesses to follow!
